Flooding of the area occurred on Friday August 9th and we are still feeling the effects of this unprecedented deluge of water from the torrential down pours that Tropical Storm Debby produced. All over Upstate New York the fields and roadways were flooded; over saturating the ground, leading to impassable fields and submerged roads. Numerous farmer crops were ruined because they were sunk underwater.
The ground is still struggling to absorb all this excess rain fall. This growing season has been very challenging ever since spring, with rains that just will not let up. Due to the unsatisfactory effects of the recent weather we are behind on our second cutting of hay, which we use primarily to feed our milking cows.
However; not even the floods can completely halt our progress. The corn and soybeans have been finally planted. The next step is to plant five acres of winter spelt, which is a form of wheat that is high in protein, fiber and anti-oxidants. Winter spelt is very well known to the local Amish community, since they plant this crop regularly and make bread out of the flour.
We are also planning on planting winter rye, as well as forty acres of triticale. Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye that was first bred in laboratories during the late 19th century in Scotland and Germany.
Additionally, we are also working on the construction of a dedicated freezer building for our beef and pork retail business. Deliveries to the local school districts have begun for both the 2024 and 2025 school years.
This fall the manure pit needs to be completely emptied. This liquid gold will then be spread on our many fields as a nutrient dense fertilizer before the winter snows arrive. Much to do still!
