As we turn the calendar to November, there's a crispness in the air and a sense of gratitude all around the farm. It's been a challenging season here in Upstate New York — one marked by dry weather and unusually low stream levels. The drought we experienced through the summer and fall has certainly made its mark. Our creeks are running lower than we've seen in years, reminding us just how closely our livelihood depends on the rhythms of nature. Despite the dry conditions, harvest season marches on. We're spending our days walking the corn and soybean fields, checking for readiness. For soybeans, we've been opening pods and checking the seeds to see if they've reached the right stage for harvest. The corn fields, too, are getting close — and we're keeping a careful eye on moisture levels to make sure we pick at just the right time. In between harvest checks, we've been putting our no-till seed hopper to work. No-till reseeding is a big part of how we care for our soil — keeping it healthy, reducing erosion, and improving water retention. It's one of the many ways we're trying to do our part to build a more resilient future for the farm and the land we love.

November brings two holidays that mean so much to us here at Ortman Farms. Veterans Day is a time to honor all who have served our country — men and women who've sacrificed to preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day. To our veterans in the community and beyond: we thank you, deeply. And of course, Thanksgiving is right around the corner — a day to gather, share good food, and give thanks for family, friends, and the bounty of the season. Even in a tough year, there's always something to be grateful for. Around our table, we'll be counting our blessings, big and small — and we hope you'll do the same. From all of us at Ortman Farms, thank you for being part of our extended farm family. Wishing you a warm, healthy, and grateful November.
Seasonal Farm Tip
Celebrate the flavors of fall with a simple maple-glazed pork roast. Mix equal parts pure maple syrup and Dijon mustard, brush over a pork loin, and roast until golden. It's sweet, savory, and perfect alongside roasted squash or apple compote. A taste of the farm, straight to your Thanksgiving table!
