The Newest News
Harvest season is in full swing at Ortman Farms. We have successfully picked all of our corn crops off of our fields. Now we are focusing on tackling the soybean crops. We have been very fortunate that the majority of soybeans we have harvested have been nice and dry due to a lack of rain. This absence of extra moisture is positive because it prevents us from having to put the soybeans into a large grain dryer. Thus, saving a step in the grain making process.
There are always hurdles to contend with on a daily basis. For instance, the Canada geese have munched joyfully on 10 acres of our soybeans. Luckily we had the foresight to plan for this loss by proactively planting extra soybeans. Recent rains have pressured us to not dilly-dally with collecting the remaining soybeans. Harvesting our crops requires us to ferry all of our equipment from the farm to our many fields. Driving the humungous Combine over the roads can take up much of the roadway. Our team ensures safety by having a flagger directing traffic during these endeavors.
We are steadfastly working on improvements to our infra-structure on the farm, to include an even more secure pig fence. The spreading of our liquid manure is still in progress, as we continue to empty the manure pit before the winter storms arrive. Additionally, we recently acquired winter rye seed with the intent of No-till drill inter-seeding of our fields after our soy beans are completely harvested.

Fall time evokes comfort dishes that warm you up as the temperatures drop outside. Try your hand at making a delicious savory pot of chili using our very own Ortman Farms ground beef. Maybe even add in some of our ground pork to give it an even heartier flavor. Chili is such a versatile dish and one where you can really add your own special twist to it.
Try adding in some cocoa powder, ground cinnamon, dark coffee or beer to give your chile added dimension as it simmers on your stove or crockpot. Or get creative with your toppings and crumble in some corn chips, top with shredded cheese or sliced green onions!
