May in the North Country is the time to tackle those crucial spring chores on the farm. Winter's harsh conditions can leave the soil compacted and nutrients depleted. Thus, this is the time to begin preparing your fields. If you want to find out what your soil needs are for nutrients you can test your soil with a home tester kit. Then you will know with certainty what fertilizers or compost you will need to apply to get your crops off to a great start.
Early spring is also the time to plant early crops like peas, lettuce or spinach. On our farm we are still in the processing and preparation state of planting oats. We still need to plow and harrow our fields, as well as apply our nitrogen fertilizer. The fertilizer will help our winter rye to come out of the ground faster and produce a better crop yield.
In addition to preparing the fields, our fences need to be repaired or rebuilt. Our livestock depend on strong and secure fences. Therefore, spring is the best time to walk the fence line and assess for any damage caused by winter storms or wildlife.
