June is a critical month for farmers across Upstate New York, where much of the region falls within USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 6. These zones reflect a shorter, more unpredictable growing season, with the last frost often lingering into late May and the first frost returning as early as late September. This narrow window makes timely planting essential. This year, however, frequent rain showers and cooler-than-average temperatures have added extra pressure.
Thus, whenever the sun breaks through, we make the most of it. Fields are being plowed, harrowed, and seeded as quickly as conditions allow. We've focused first on drier pastures where the soil is more workable, allowing us to get a head start.
While summer might mean vacations and downtime for many, for those of us in agriculture, it's our busiest stretch. These warmer months are our opportunity to make the most of the land, and every clear day counts.
As always, equipment readiness plays a major role in how efficiently we can move. Some machinery, left idle over the winter, still needs maintenance or repairs. With such a narrow window of good weather, it's vital to have everything running smoothly. Delays now can cost us valuable time later, especially as we prepare for the fall harvest and the long winter that follows.
