June is the month of planting our crops. It has been a challenge since most days we have had showers and cooler temperatures. It is imperative that we plant in a timely manner due to the short growing season we experience in Upstate New York. Therefore every day the sun shines we grab the opportunity to prepare the soil by plowing, harrowing and sowing the seeds. Some pastures are drier so we are able to tend to those first.
Some of our equipment that did not get maintained over the winter still needs to be repaired or replaced. There is no time to delay. This equipment has to be up and running during the short window of good weather. So that we do not lose precious cropping time before the fall harvest season and imminent winter months.
The infrastructure for the pork operation is still ongoing. Drastic improvements include the removal and clearing of trees, as well as brush to expand the available land for a more permanent pig barn and access road.
The good weather during the summer months may signal summer break from school, vacations at the beach, pool parties and back yard grilling. However; for us farmers it is the optimal time to get things done!

The classic American Hamburger:
Season 1 lb of ground beef with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Shape into four 4 oz patties with one inch thickness. A great option is to use our already pre-formed frozen beef patties!
Grill hamburgers on either a charcoal or gas grill for 4 minutes per side at 400 degrees farenheight. Melt a slice of American or cheddar cheese on burger before transferring to plate.
Place hamburger on bun and garnish with your choice of lettuce, tomatoes, onion, ketchup, mustard, mayo and relish. Serve with your choice of side and cold beverage.
