The Newest News on the Farm
Wintry weather is still upon us, with warmer temperatures producing lots of snow showers. This is not optimal combining weather because the ground will be soft and the heavy machine could sink. Also, too much snow sitting on top of the corn can clog up the corn head. The weather can make it a very tricky process to combine corn and other grains. Through this all we did successfully combine some of our fields this past month.
We are so grateful we purchased our grain truck. Having this additional piece of equipment allows us to move forward more quickly by loading up the grain cart and allowing us to store it while we wait for the grain mill's truck to come to transfer and transport our grain back to the mill using their grain auger. A grain auger is a screw conveyor designed to deposit grain into a bin or silo for further processing or distribution. Needless to say we spend a lot of time on the weather channel, and when the weather conditions seem right (i.e frigid and dry) we make sure we're ready to climb into our big beast and start combining!

Community Involvement
Ortman Farms is partnered with Parishville-Hopkinton and Massena Central School Districts. Our pasture raised beef and pork is being prepared by the cafeteria staff into various nutritious lunchtime dishes for the students and faculty.
