The Newest News
The holiday season is here but the daily routine of farm life continues like clock work. With the milking of our dairy cows, as well as the feeding, and bedding down of the young heifers, steers and pigs. We still have yet to see snow at the farm thus the burning question is, will we be getting a white Christmas this year?
If we are blessed with good weather, the combining of our corn will be able to be finished soon. Rain is not a friend to combining because the grain needs to be dry as it enters the machine. The combine which weighs about 15,000 lbs needs traction and could sink in very wet soil. That is why sometimes you see farmers driving their combines on frozen ground.
We still have about 200 acres of corn left to be combined, which will signal the end of the harvest. All the hard work and long hours into the night will have paid off when we are feeding our animals the nutritious food we have produced in the long winter months. That brings us back to the importance of feed.
Our chopped corn silage is now sitting in our six large Ag-Bags and are busily fermenting to make the most nutritious food for our cows to eat. We actually had two bags left over from last year. What luck to have a surplus so all we had to contribute was four more. Also, our manure pit is almost emptied. Our manure spreader holds 3,000 gallons per load and we have taken out an incredible 200 trips of liquid manure to be spread on our fields. Next year we will not have to purchase as much fertilizer for the hay fields. What future savings!

Culinary Creations
Turkey was likely your main course at Thanksgiving. Let this month feature a delicious Christmas ham at the center of your table. What makes this roast so special is its honey glaze. Bake your bone in ham at 325 degrees F at 1 1/2 hours or until reaching an internal temperature of 145 degrees F, covered in foil. Add the glaze towards the end of cooking.
Ham Glaze:
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1 cup brown sugar
• 2 tbsp honey
• 2 tbsp mustard
• 1/4 cup orange juice
Wishing everyone a Happy Holiday & Joyful New Year!
