The Newest News
The last full month of summer is upon us and the need to take advantage of the good weather we do have is paramount. This year has been extremely wet and these unfavorable conditions have meant that we are a bit behind schedule. However; even the weather cannot prevent us from getting our necessary crops planted. The oats have been planted for forage and we are about to embark on the planting of the winter rye crops.
Happy Birthday (June) Farmer Michael!
As we continue to develop our farming practices at Ortman Farms we plan to pursue aggressive no till cover grain planting amongst our grain corn and soybean crops. Interseeding cover crops into our main crops can lead to improvements in soil quality, increased nutrient retention, prevention of erosion and suppression of weeds.
We are continuing work on improving the 40 acre hog pasture fence for our current count of 250 hogs. Our farm is truly one of many uses and supports not just our dairy operation but also our beef and pork animals. Our retail business is doing well with door to door knocking increasing our sales. With the recent awarding of a grant from Farmer Veteran Coalition we are making improvements on expanding our freezer storage space to meet the increased inventory we have on hand.

• It takes over a gallon of milk to make one gallon of ice cream!
• Like a snowflake, no two cows have the same exact pattern of spots.
• Pigs don't have sweat glands, so they can't sweat – so the term 'sweating like a pig' is completely false.
• Corn can be grown on every continent except Antarctica.
• One acre of soybeans can produce more than 80,000 crayons. That's a lot of coloring!

A Farmer's Almanac Snippet
In the month of August the full Moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon, will appear on the afternoon of Monday, August 19, reaching peak illumination at 2:26 P.M. Eastern Time. The name Sturgeon Moon comes from the giant lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain; this native freshwater fish was readily caught during this part of summer and an important food staple for Native Americans who lived in the region. This will be the first Supermoon of the year, which means that it will appear bigger and brighter than the full Moons we have seen so far. Information obtained via courtesy of www.almanac.com.
