The Newest News
April is the month to again empty the now full manure pit. We had previously emptied it this past summer and generously spread it on our many fields prior to planting. Now after a winters worth collection of high octane "liquid gold" that our cows have produced, it is time again to repeat the process. The manure needs to be removed from the pit, hauled and spread onto our fields before it is plowed, harrowed and planted. The date and time for this is up to the weather and dependent on when we get a window when the frost is out of the ground.
We will also try to get some oats planted into the ground this month. However; the plowing and harrowing of the fields first will be necessary. To prepare the fields well we need to plan to spread 100lbs to the acre of 46-0-0 of nitrogen fertilizer. This will help the winter rye to come out of the ground faster and to get a better yield.
Additionally, we have also washed our new refrigerated truck, also known as a "Reefer Truck" for our deliveries. The outside of the truck needed a little springtime cleaning to be in tip top shape. This was a joint venture with Farmer Michael and his two daughters helping out their dad.
Luna, the german shepherd, was hard at work supervising this venture. We are so excited to have this task done and can't wait to bring our farm fresh products from our store to your door!

Held annually in Tupper lake this regional event brought local producers and schools together to meet, network and promote farm-to-school options. Ortman Farms is currently active in providing our beef and pork to sixteen local schools in the St. Lawrence County. This opportunity allowed Farmer Michael to gain more insight into this New York State wide initiative. Really fostering the farm-to-table mentality and focusing on locally sourced ingredients for a healthy lifestyle in on our community.
